Hey boos. Just slowly winding down the week over here and looking forward to some dance class tonight. Which reminds me: Ali P. once again comes through with some dance, a video from one of The Pulse conventions. I went to the one in Atlanta several years ago — Ali P. was there, too! — and it was a good, good time. Have the sweatpants to prove it. It took me about three days before I could move properly again — my hip sockets felt like they had been popped out and then popped back in — but it was a great weekend. Looks like it’s coming to Boston in February. But no D.C. If it ever comes to the District, I’d be down for hitting it up…
My pops has this theory and I like it. We were talking about how people that seemingly get everything they want — but through questionable means — can still be angry and dissatisfied. He says he can’t explain it except that when you skip steps in a process — like hooking up or being with someone because the “group” chooses that for you (very popular with high school kids) instead of going through the process of falling in love; or electing a President who really didn’t earn his popularity but somehow manages to get elected based on some dubious promises, to use two examples (although the examples are infinite) you’ll find that whatever success you achieve will ultimately be dissatisfying. Because you skipped steps in the process. I’m still working it out but it makes sense to me…
Anyway, I wrote this earlier this morning and I thought I’d share it here since the alliance and understanding between these two religious groups seems to be affecting some world events at present. And some interesting things are happening as a result of that.

Thank you Jon Stewart for giving me things like this to talk about this morning. I had a really good conversation about faith and, as Jonah Goldberg puts it, the tyranny of cliches with a friend because of this. Here’s the thing: I know you say things like this from a place of self-deprecation. You’re not Bill Maher trying to shock and offend everyone and, put simply, be a dick. But when you spout off about something make sure you understand the basics before doing so because then this kind of thing gets perpetuated as something “smart” you’ve said (8 likes is too many). And it’s not. Because your opinion may be that it’s the height of arrogance but the religion is designed around the pondering of just these ideas. And I’m sure you didn’t mean to say that Christianity itself is arrogant, right? Or, did you? Because that’s a whole other conversation… (forgive my misspelling of your name. See how it perpetuates itself?)
Speaking of the behaviorally phallic, this is some kind of convention right here. Sorry boys but you kinda are what you act like.
Surprise! No doubt, if it happens, this will be blamed squarely on Boehner for not caving but I think he and Romney probably could have a struck a deal quicker than he and Obama. For a whole myriad of reasons that have nothing to do with Boehner or Conservatives’ desire to see a middle class tax hike. Sucks. But then, I voted for the other guy so I guess I don’t feel as bad about it as others. That is to say I’ve had time to process it because I KNEW ABOUT IT WHEN I VOTED. The Distinguished Veteran has a good post about this…
Okay, let’s talk about Obamacare now shall we? Why not! This is all the fun stuff that you voted for so here it is! Hooray! Also, here. And here. So, if you’re in the profession, maybe you tighten up now a bit? I know my sister is aware of these developments…
And, to wrap up the politics, I’m here today. I’ve seen this floating around and I finally read it. I hate to despair — but I have to admit, the schadenfreude is satisfying in a way… A bit:
But, consider this: A president of the United States just ran a reelection campaign based on the promise of government largess, exploitation of class division, the demonization of success, the glorification of identity politics, and the presumption that women are a helpless interest group; and he did so while steadfastly refusing to acknowledge the looming — potentially fatal — crisis that the country faces. And it worked.
And it worked because this is the mentality of a great many kids who voted for it. Those low-information voters can thank you all. I’ll be sure to point them in your direction.
Other things:
I think this is interesting. Ron Paul was just widely reported as having asked in his farewell speech to fight to make sure government keeps their greedy fingers off the internet to ensure propaganda doesn’t become the order of the day. But turning a profit is also a great incentive…
Okay now on to glamor, food, music, and comedy. Because these are my actual interests. I just work on this other stuff to be able to indulge these other interests. Don’t we all?
I just got a Living Social deal for this place in Georgetown. A friend took issue with the fact that their food isn’t good — and the yelp reviews are pretty bad — but my contention is 1) it just had a grand re-opening and has a new chef so why wouldn’t you spend $20 to try out a meal and a few cocktails and 2) it’s on the water, man. I’d pay $20 just to sit there and drink two beers…So, I have till March to go and co-worker is in. Adventure!
Speaking of work, we’ve decided to do a black-tie thing for our Christmas party and, because I don’t have a gown that still fits, I found two, rather inexpensive dresses (seriously, these are both shockingly reasonable) but I’m not sure which one to get. It’s between this:
and this:
The jeweled bodice is so beautiful in the latter, but the former is just amazing. I love the way it drapes. It’s also significantly lower in cost and comes in charcoal and navy…Would love some suggestions if you know me and see me any time soon…
So, I’m making this this weekend to try it out so I can take it home to the folks at Christmas to get them tipsy and watch The Trouble with the Curve.
What!!! Another Christmas cookie! I’m going to be ordering a set of these immediately. There’s a shortbread recipe of my Grandma’s that would be perfect!
Finally, I do think I’ll make a batch of this and take it to the cousin’s. I’m sure it will keep well and it just looks tasty. Nothing like a good pecan…
Another Christmas gift idea. Love it. I’ll make it for me first to see if it’s worth the effort. Much to do this weekend… Speaking of, does anyone know a good place to eat and kick around in Annapolis? I need suggestions…
I would add Bowfinger to this list.
Forgive the re-post of this link but movie looks like it’s one I will eventually own and I wanted to celebrate this song again because it’s bad ass. I could be wrong but I think I want to read the book first…
The Coach just sent me a link and told me that South Park was making fun of the Occupy nonsense like 7 years ago. Brilliant. “You mean like a baker and a cop?”
Sometimes I listen to the Monkees to feel better about things. This song sounded particularly awesome this morning.
